The Long Road to Serenity: Walking the Devil's Staircase
Trek the legendary Devil's Staircase from Ohiya to Kalupahana. A 14km endurance test passing Sri Lanka's tallest waterfall, Bambarakanda, and the famous V-Cut pass.
Welcome to the Devil’s Staircase.
Don’t let the name fool you—there are no actual stairs here. Instead, this is a 14km broken road that zigzags violently through the mountains, connecting the misty heights of Ohiya to the village of Kalupahana. It is widely considered one of the most scenic and grueling trekking routes in Sri Lanka.
The Route: From the Clouds to the Valley
While 4x4 enthusiasts love this track for its axle-breaking terrain, the true way to experience it is on foot.
The Descent from Ohiya: We recommend starting from the Ohiya end (near the Horton Plains entrance). The air here is freezing, and the landscape is dominated by silent pine forests and eucalyptus trees. As you begin your descent, the view suddenly splits open.
The "V-Cut": A few kilometers in, you’ll reach the famous "V-Cut"—a narrow channel carved manually through a hill to let the road pass. Walking through this wind tunnel feels like stepping through a portal; on the other side, the tea estates of the Uva province sprawl out below you like a green carpet.
Highlights Along the Way
This isn't just a walk; it's a tour of the highlands' changing geography.
- Bambarakanda Falls: As you near the end of the trail, you will be greeted by the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Unlike the hidden tiers of Gerandi Ella, Bambarakanda is a singular, majestic 263-meter drop that commands attention.
- Lanka Ella: If your legs still have power, a short detour takes you to this unique waterfall, named for its base pool which is shaped exactly like the map of Sri Lanka.
- The Switchbacks: The "Staircase" gets its name from the sharp, hairpin bends that wind down the mountain. Standing at the top and looking at the road coiling below is a dizzying reminder of how far you have to walk.
A Test of Endurance
Unlike the technical rock scrambling required for Kanawiddagala, this hike is a mental game. The distance is long, the sun can be harsh once you leave the pine forests, and the road is rough underfoot.
- Distance: Approx. 14km (Descent)
- Duration: 5–7 Hours
- Difficulty: Moderate (High Endurance)
Sanchare Practical Tips
- Start Early: We start at 7:00 AM sharp. By noon, the mist usually rolls in and obscures the views of the southern plains.
- Footwear: Hiking boots are better than running shoes here. The loose rocks and gravel can be tough on your ankles over 14km.
- Hydration: There are very few shops along the route until you reach the tea estate villages near the bottom. Sanchare guides carry extra water, but a hydration pack is your best friend.
