The Misty Veils of Knuckles
Explore Sera Ella's secret cave and cross the suspension bridge at Bambara Kiri Ella. Discover the hidden waterfalls of the Knuckles Range with Sanchare.
After the expansive views and starry nights of Upper Diyaluma, we are diving back into the heart of the Dumbara Valley. If our previous trips to Yahangala and Lakegala were about conquering the sky, today is about discovering the secrets hidden in the mist.
The Knuckles Mountain Range is home to some of the most secluded waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Today, we highlight two giants that offer completely different experiences: the "Curtain of Water" and the "Suspension Thrill."
Sera Ella: The Cave Behind the Curtain
Sera Ella is not just a waterfall; it’s an architectural wonder of nature. Located in the Puwakpitiya area, it consists of two wide cascades that drop over a rock face.
The Secret Feature: What makes Sera Ella iconic is the cave located directly behind the falling water. During the dry and moderate seasons, a cool, stony path leads you inside the cavern. Standing there, you can watch the world through a shimmering, translucent wall of water. The sound is deafening, the air is perfectly chilled, and the feeling is purely magical.
- The Vibe: Ethereal and serene. It’s the perfect place for meditation or a quiet moment away from the tropical heat.
- Photo Op: Capturing the view from inside the cave looking out through the falls is a must-have for any adventurer's portfolio.
Bambara Kiri Ella: The Jungle Suspension
A short distance away, near Rattota, lies Bambara Kiri Ella. This waterfall is smaller in volume than Sera Ella but packs a punch in terms of raw, jungle atmosphere.
The Thrill: The waterfall is split into two sections: the main fall and the "Little Bambara Kiri Ella." To get the best view, you must cross an old, narrow suspension bridge that hangs high over the rushing stream. As you walk across, the bridge sways slightly, giving you a top-down view of the white water crashing into the dark pools below.
- The Trek: The path to the base is short but can be slippery, winding through towering ferns and ancient trees.
- The Warning: The base pool looks inviting, but it is deceptively deep with strong undercurrents. At Sanchare, we always recommend admiring the power of this one from the safety of the rocks or the bridge.
Why These Two?
While the Gerandi Ella trek was a vertical climb up the water, today’s journey is about the environment surrounding the water. From the prehistoric caves of Sera Ella to the swaying bridges of Bambara Kiri, these spots showcase the diversity of the Knuckles' ecosystem.
Sanchare Practical Tips
- Leech Protection: As with any Knuckles trek, leeches are the unofficial gatekeepers. Wear your leech socks!
- Best Time to Visit: These falls are most majestic just after the monsoon rains (November to January), but the cave at Sera Ella is safest to enter when the flow is moderate.
- Local Food: The villages around Puwakpitiya offer some of the best traditional "Heenati" rice and lake fish curry. We always include a local meal stop on this tour.
